Q: My husband and our baby would like to take a trip to Scotland and we are looking for suggestions on where to go and stay. Our priority is that it is CLEAN, but our budget is small. Any advice?

A: Visit Edinburgh for a spectacular city break with a historical, cultural and architectural twist. Consider the North West Highlands and Islands for seriously beautiful scenery and outdoor activities. If you are on a budget, you may want to consider staying in a B&B or guest house. These are often family run, well maintained, and you can pay a lot less than some hotels for similar levels of luxury and cleanliness. Check to see what star ratings they have received from VisitScotland, formerly known as the Scottish Tourist Board. This organisation awards star ratings to indicate the standard of customer care and range of facilities on offer at assessed establishments. To keep costs down further, try dining in pubs rather than restaurants. Ask the locals which are the best. Avoid restaurants in very touristy areas (such as Edinburgh's Royal Mile) as they tend to rip you off.
