How much would it cost to travel to Russia?

Q: I was thinking about visiting Moscow or St. Petersburg next Summer for a week and was wondering how much it would cost for a a ticket, a hotel, food, and entertainment. I've tried looking online, but haven't found any estimates. Has anyone done this before?

A: Well, how much depends on several different things. First, it depends where you're traveling *from.* We'll assume for the sake of conversation that you're traveling from the US, in which case an airline ticket is going to cost anywhere from $800-1500 depending on what time of year you'll be traveling, and how far in advance you purchase your ticket. The most expensive part of traveling once you've reached your destination is always food and lodging. Of course, the amount you'll spend will depend on how frugal you are and what sacrifices you're willing to make. If you're willing to do a little budget traveling, which means not staying in fancy hotels and eating picnic lunches, you can probably estimate your daily food and lodging costs at about $100 per day (plus or minus $20). The rest of the cost will be determined by how many sights you want to see, how many trinkets you buy, etc. I wouldn't recommend skimping too much on the sightseeing since that's where most of your travel memories are made, but you can probably get away with just buying friends and family a postcard rather than little bottles of vodka or other "must-have" souvenir items. Sooo... all that said, I think you could safely estimate a one week trip to Russia at about $2000 dollars, plus or minus $200.
